Position Title: Raleigh Rollin Rec Program – VISTA Summer Associate

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placement

Site Location:

Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority

117 N Heber Street, Beckley, WV 25801

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 6/1/2026
  • End Date: 8/9/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 hours (Minimum-Time)

Purpose:

  • Poverty in Raleigh County often shows up as low household incomes, high child poverty rates, and limited access to safe, affordable youth programs. This project helps address those barriers by expanding free, reliable play and enrichment opportunities for local kids. By improving program systems, strengthening daily operations, and increasing capacity, the project supports families who lack resources and creates a more stable, supportive environment for youth—key factors that reduce long-term vulnerability and help communities move toward greater economic stability.
  • This project builds capacity by creating lasting systems and tools the organization can use long after the Summer Associate’s term. The Associate streamlines daily operations, organizes materials, improves activity guides, and develops simple evaluation and tracking processes. These improvements make the program more efficient, more consistent, and better equipped to serve more youth in future seasons.
  • The Summer Associate will support and strengthen this emerging youth program over a 10-week term. They’ll assist with daily setup and cleanup, engage kids in play, maintain equipment, and help ensure smooth operations. They will observe activities, gather feedback, and track participation to understand what works. The Associate will also create or refine tools such as checklists, activity guides, and simple evaluation summaries. End Result: A more organized, efficient program supported by updated materials, clear recommendations, and practical systems that improve future seasons.

Description of Duties:

The Summer Associate will focus on capacity-building activities that produce internal planning resources, documentation tools, and community engagement materials. Duties may include compiling labor market research summaries, developing workforce resource inventories, creating community asset maps, organizing environmental data sets, drafting partnership coordination frameworks, designing planning templates and resource guides, and assisting with public-facing informational workshops, outreach campaigns, or site observations. Activities are designed to strengthen host organizations’ capacity, guide long-term workforce and environmental program development, provide tangible connections between planning tools and community needs, and support measurable outcomes in workforce access, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

VISTA members will take an active, hands-on role in shaping this first-year youth program. They’ll help set up and break down daily activities, engage kids in creative play, maintain equipment, and support smooth program operations. Members will also gather feedback, observe what resonates with participants, and recommend improvements to strengthen future seasons. This role is perfect for someone energetic, adaptable, and excited to build something meaningful for local youth from the ground up.
