Virgin Islands National Park
The National Park Service preserves, protects, and shares the United States natural, historical, and cultural history and resources with the global visiting public and ensures their conservation for future generations. The Virgin Islands National Park was established in 1956 on the island of St. John and serves both communities of St. Thomas and St. John in the US Virgin Islands.
Role of YES Member at Virgin Islands National Park
The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) AmeriCorps Member at Virgin Islands National Park will support the Virgin Islands National Park in reinforcing its visitor services offerings to better connect with and meet the needs of the community of Virgin Islanders, as well as the visiting public at both St. John and St. Thomas. The YES Member will assist the visitor services division with three specific projects: a redesign of a Jr. Ranger Booklet, The Volunteer Mineral Based Sunscreen Beach Outreach Program, and providing assistance with and feedback on park’s summer youth employment Youth Conservation Corps program.
Description of Duties:
To achieve the goals of this YES position, the member will:
- Assist with the park’s plan to redesign the Jr. Ranger booklet
o Create drafts of engaging activities to be added to the Jr. Ranger booklet
o Test drafts of the booklet with target audiences and gather feedback to review and incorporate - Rove Park beaches with Park Rangers and volunteers to connect with visitors and inform them of the health benefits of using Mineral Based Sunscreen
- Assist with volunteer recruitment and training for the Mineral Based Sunscreen initiative
- Assist the Visitor Services Program Manager with the park’s summer Youth Conservation Corps projects and activities for the summer Youth Conservation Corps
- Opportunity to experience a Youth Conservation Corps
- Provide feedback for future planning to increase access and inclusion
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Be between the ages of 18-30 (or up to age 35 with Veteran status)
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Able to commit to 18 weeks of service
- Have a connection to the disability community
- Excellent Customer Service, Communication, Collaboration, and Conflict Resolution skills
- Ability to drive with a valid driver’s license and insurable record
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Creative writing and Graphic Design skills and experience
- Youth Leadership experience
- CPR/AED certifications

Time Requirements:
Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service. Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities
- Foundations of Interpretation
- Audience-Centered Engagement and Interpretive Writing training
- CPR/AED Basic First Aid training
- On-the-job volunteer coordinating training

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
