Position Title: Build Up GIS Intern—National Park Service Land Resources Division—AmeriCorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Site Location: Fort Collins, CO

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 5/4/2026, preference given to applications received by 4/6/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1200 hours, 32-weeks

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

The Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. HPTC’s Build Up Technical Internship Program offers technical internships in fields like engineering, architecture, and project management. Interns work on large-scale projects with NPS teams nationwide.

STE in partnership with HPTC are seeking a service member to serve with the National Park Service Land Resources Division to support the Northeast Region GIS program. The member will assist with GIS data conversion, development of digital land status datasets, enterprise geodatabase maintenance, and production of maps that support land acquisition and boundary management for the National Park System. The member will work with regional cartographers and lands staff to research land records, interpret legal land descriptions, and support mapping products used for legislative, budgetary, and programmatic needs. Through this work, the member will gain practical experience with enterprise GIS systems, cadastral mapping, and the role of geospatial data in supporting the protection of natural and cultural resources

Description of Duties:

  • Convert and organize spatial and tabular datasets to support development of enterprise geodatabase land status data.
  • Update tract and boundary GIS datasets using approved National Park Service workflows and quality control procedures.
  • Produce maps and GIS products supporting land acquisition, right-of-way mapping, and departmental requests.
  • Assist with research and interpretation of land records, legal descriptions, and boundary documentation.
  • Support enterprise GIS maintenance, data management, and development of web mapping applications and lands-related webpages.
  • Collaborate with regional cartographers and lands staff on GIS analysis and mapping projects

Minimum Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a degree program in geography, GIS, environmental science, land management, surveying, or a related field.
  • Basic familiarity with GIS concepts and computer-based data management.
  • Ability to work in an office environment, follow detailed procedures, and communicate effectively with staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using GIS software (such as ArcGIS Pro), coursework or experience in cartography, geospatial analysis, or cadastral/land records mapping.
  • Familiarity with geodatabases, spatial data editing, and basic data management.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization skills, and interest in public lands or natural resource management

Time Requirements:

Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday through Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service

Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • The member will receive hands-on training in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and NPS geospatial workflows used for tract, boundary, and land status data management. Training will include enterprise geodatabase structure and maintenance, GIS data conversion and quality control, interpretation of legal land descriptions and land records, map production, and development of web mapping applications using ArcGIS Experience Builder.
  • The member will also gain experience collaborating with lands staff and cartographers to support real-world land acquisition and boundary management projects.

  • Living Allowance of $700 per week & Additional Benefit of $140 per week (Equivalent to $21/hr pre-tax)

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
