Program and Position Summary:
Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps (ALCC) engages motivated young adults, to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the western United States. Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation, historic preservation, and local environmental service projects. ALCC provides opportunities for members to learn about and connect with the environment, issues surrounding conservation, and local Indigenous values.
ALCC crews work in a variety of National Parks, National Forests, tribal lands and other public areas. Selected members are placed on a crew which will then collaborate to perform project work. ALCC is a non-residential program and does not offer housing. Gear and equipment rental is available upon request. Crews are granted a food budget during time away on project.
Crew Structure: (1) Crew Leader, (1) Assistant Crew Leader, (4) Crew Members
The AmeriCorps Assistant Crew Leader (ACL) is responsible for facilitating a positive Crew Member experience. The ACL is a full partner in the crew’s leadership, helping to communicate directions, projects specifications and constructive criticism throughout the term. This position requires open dialog with the Crew Leader; helping them to manage projects, project partners communications, overall logistics, and crew assignments. Our program model fosters a supportive learning environment where participants can maximize their opportunities to grow and develop while gaining certifications to propel them into a career in environmental stewardship. It also creates an intentional space for groups that are under-represented to step into conservation and natural resource management.
It means more than just showing up, it means setting an example of how to persevere with great enthusiasm through various types of conditions while practicing good judgement and safety. It means facilitating a learning experience for Crew Members, both formally and informally. This position may require additional participation time outside of standard project and crew hours.
This position will be coached and mentored by their ALCC Crew Leader, ALCC Roving Crew Leader and ALCC Staff. ACLs are responsible for maintaining ALCC’s high standards for technical projects and hands-on member growth, managing projects and implementing feedback among crew members. The ACL Position is a key development opportunity designed to identify and overcome challenges in leadership through a hands-on leadership role in conjunction with close mentorship from the Crew Leader. Qualified candidates will identify growth plans and assist the Crew Leader in administrative functions.
Description of Duties:

Project Management & Implementation - assistant crew leaders will be trained and expected to demonstrate progressing ability in the skills listed below
- Train and motivate a crew of 5 young adults to efficiently complete conservation projects on public lands
- Delegation of project work & investment among crew leader and crew
- Manage the on-the-ground quality and quantity of project work
- Think critically to resolve issues and solve problems
- Communicate effectively & coordinate logistics with project partners, crew leader, & ALCC staff
Assistant Crew Leaders are not required to have all this experience but will be mentored in obtaining these experiences. The assistant crew leader will work with the Crew Leader to foster a culture of accountability and safety within the crew.
- Manage, supervise, and lead the day-to-day details of project work.
- Implement skills training on worksite and facilitate intentional discussions via informal lessons to contribute to the crew’s personal growth and group dynamics
- Promote individual corps member development and a healthy community
- Must be willing to follow and enforce all AL policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent Ancestral Lands. This includes creating a substance free work environment, refraining from the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs while involved in the program.
Safety & Risk Management
- Monitor, manage, and promote the crew’s physical and emotional safety on and off the work site
- Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety
- Transport crew and equipment safely in ALCC’s vehicles with trailers
Administration - assists the Crew Leader in completing professional documentation of daily and weekly reports, corps member and peer evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 21 years of age
- Have a driver's license and insurable driving record
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
Physical Requirements:

Some positions may require periodic overnight travel, non-traditional hours, ability to move across varied terrain, use program-specific tools and a range of technology on an infrequent or frequent basis. Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve Tuesday to Tuesday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
Assistant Crew Leader will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
Assistant Crew Leader will participate in Crew Leader Training prior to the start of crew members.
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award depending on term length
- Living Allowance: Training Pay(6/1/2026-8/28/2026) of $480 per week, Regular Season(8/29/2026-12/11/2026) of $580 per week
- Additional Benefit of $170 per week
- Loan forbearance if Eligible
Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
