Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps affiliated program that provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas. Stewards, in partnership With KATMAI NATIONAL PARK AND PERSERVE (KATM), are seeking a service member who will assist in water and wastewater operations at King Salmon and Brooks Camp locations.

This support will include water treatment plant operations, collection of samples and organization, wastewater collection and treatment, plumbing and additional duties as described below. The Water Lab & Utilities Shop Service Member will work independently and/or as part of a small team on water/wastewater operations and maintenance on systems parkwide. In addition to performing these tasks, the intern will engage in a wide breadth of professional development opportunities.

Description of Duties:

Water Treatment.

  • Assist in the operation of a variety of water treatment systems at King Salmon and Brooks Camp.
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing pumps, holding tanks, distribution pumps, Walchem and LMI metering pumps, injection points, and distribution systems.
  • Seasonal start up and shut down of the various well houses, holding tanks, and distribution systems throughout Brooks Camp.

Samples and Organization

  • Collecting and coordinating the delivery of monthly Coliform (TCR), annual Nitrate, TTHM, HAA5, 3-year cycle Lead & Copper, VOC, 9-year cycle.
  • Radium 226 & 228, Total Gross Alpha, Arsenic, and Inorganics samples and keeping associated records organized.

Wastewater Collection and Maintenance

  • Maintain the wastewater collection lines in good condition and keep the wastewater facilities in good condition.
  • Maintain, operate, and repair wastewater storage tanks, lift pumps, force mains, and leech fields.
  • Assist with annual sludge and septic tank sludge removal, treatment and disposal operations at Brooks Camp and at Lake Camp locations.

Plumbing

  • Assist with performing plumbing related duties which will include planning, layout, and routing of piping systems specifically related to the water and wastewater fields in potentially culturally sensitive areas requiring cultural and environmental compliance.
  • Adjust the slant, slope, and grade of these systems to ensure the proper operation of the water and wastewater systems.
  • Assist with work from sketches and blueprints or other technical data.
  • Assist with work on the installation and repair of different types of piping which include ductile iron, copper, galvanized steel, asbestos, PVC, and cast iron as well as transition couplings and valves associated with these materials.
  • Assist with rodding sewer lines, repairing various pumps, and general plumbing maintenance which includes sewage lift station repairs and wastewater collection systems.

Additional Duties

  • Minor maintenance to buildings, housing, and grounds using the following building maintenance skills: plumbing, painting, and carpentry.
  • Assist with freight and cargo handling and will utilize park equipment, vehicles, and trucks for these operations.
  • Assist with facilities grounds maintenance.
  • This position will require work both indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions and accomplishing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 18 years of age, Veterans up to 35 years of age.
  • Ability to commit to a 29-week experience of combined training and hands-on work
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • A willingness to learn skills and safety protocols.
  • Adaptability to changing circumstances.
  • Operate as a good team member within work crew and follow daily direction and effective communication.
  • Ability and skill in using PC’s, printers, phones, and other office equipment to gather, assemble, and consolidate different data.
  • Ability to arrange equipment, cargo, and freight for the best support in hauling materials, supplies, tools, and helpers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and operation of all safety equipment, tools, and devices e.g., personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Skilled in operating hand-held tools, power tools, and testing equipment such as tapes, rules, squares, hammers, power planers, hand and power saws, drills, pipe threaders, benders, packing and caulking irons, pipe wrenches, and volt/OHM am meters.

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday at a full-time capacity of 40 hours a week, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Members will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Hands-on on the job training with NPS staff
  • NPS Water and Wastewater Operator Training held at Shenandoah National Park, VA from April 6-10th
  • Operational Leadership Training

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,697.50
  • Living Allowance of $600 a week + Additional Benefit of $280 a week (equivalent to $22/hr)

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
