AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 hr

Purpose:

Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization. This individual placement is in partnership with the National Park Service and is an AmeriCorps Position. SECC empowers young adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility, and grit through community service and environmental stewardship. SECC selects young adults, ages 18-30, to complete conservation projects on public lands throughout the Southeast. SECC programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community partnerships, and emphasize experiential learning.

At Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, the intern will support urban archaeology and cultural resource compliance work associated with trail system improvements, visitor access projects, and external development reviews under Section 106 of the NHPA. The park’s 15 river units contain archaeological sites spanning from the Archaic period through the Civil War and early history of Georgia. Ongoing development pressure in the Atlanta region requires active research, survey, mapping, and historical documentation to protect sites potentially affected by both internal park and external projects reviewed through 36 CFR 800 consultation. In this setting, the intern will gain experience conducting pedestrian survey, shovel test surveys for trail projects, completing GIS site mapping, and contributing to cultural resource documentation for compliance and handling museum collections/documents. This work directly benefits local communities by helping preserve cultural heritage tied to Indigenous history, river crossings, 19th-century farmsteads, mills, and ferries. The intern's contributions will enhance data quality for long-term resource management, support responsible public access to natural areas, and strengthen the park's ability to respond to increasing development pressure in the region.
