Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements Program

Site Location: Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Battlefields Memorial National Military Park

120 Chatham Lane, Fredericksburg, VA 22401

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 2/23/2026
  • End Date: 2/5/2027
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hour Slot

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (FRSP) is a national military park that encompasses four major Civil War battlefields (Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House) as well as historic landscapes, cultural sites, and resources that reflect the region’s complex past. The volunteer program supports initiatives that connect community members with meaningful and appropriate roles across the park. This includes new and developing volunteer opportunities such as the park’s Invasive Species Corps, finding volunteers for long-term earthworks preservation, and the Ellwood grounds crew. These programs are designed to meet park needs while fostering long-term engagement and community involvement. FRSP also would like to work closely with the Rappahannock Tribe and associated tribal communities in the future to co-create volunteer roles, research projects, and youth opportunities rooted in trust-based relationships and engagement. Through outreach, coordination, and new program development, the volunteer program helps build a stronger, more varied volunteer community that supports the park’s mission while expanding opportunities for service.

The CVA will play an essential role in helping FRSP create and strengthen meaningful partnerships across the community while gaining hands-on, mission-driven experience in communication, leadership, event planning, volunteer management, and partnership development. One of the primary initiatives the CVA will support is the America 250th anniversary, where the member will work alongside park personnel as the primary point of contact for volunteer coordination. This includes attending civic planning meetings, collaborating with 14–15 partner sites across Fredericksburg, recruiting volunteers from schools, veteran groups, and community organizations, and designing a targeted social media campaign to attract participants for a multi-day community event.

Beyond the 250th commemoration, the CVA will support the park’s efforts to deepen relationships with the Rappahannock Tribe by accompanying park staff to community events, tribal council meetings, and youth programs to build trust and understand tribal goals and interests. The CVA will help co-create volunteer roles and projects that are mutually beneficial, support the development of future tribal youth individual placement opportunities, and collaborate across park divisions to design research and service projects that reflect both the tribe’s priorities and the park’s mission. Through these responsibilities, the CVA will directly contribute to expanding future volunteer opportunities, supporting meaningful and appropriate work, and helping the park shift from occasional consultation to true collaboration—all while building valuable professional experience.
