Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.
Lowell National Historical Park preserves, interprets, and shares the history, legacy, and ongoing relevance of industrialization in the United States through the perspective of Lowell, Massachusetts’s textile industry. The park promotes appreciation and responsible stewardship of the city’s unique architectural, cultural, and historical resources through strong partnerships and community collaboration. LNHP embraces partnerships as a core strategy for achieving both park and community goals and serves as a model for effective public-private collaboration.
The park maintains a robust volunteer program that offers both long-term volunteer opportunities and short, one-day events that engage the public throughout the year. Monthly cleanup events, held from April through October, draw more than 25 volunteers per event. In 2025, our National Public Lands Day event brought together over 45 volunteers to clean the Western Canal and surrounding streets. Our Citizen Science program engaged an additional 45 volunteers across three Dragonfly Mercury sampling events. This past summer, the annual three-day Lowell Folk Festival enlisted more than 340 volunteers to staff booths, assist artists, provide visitor information, record performances, and support festival operations. Our youth program, coordinated by the Volunteer Division, provides employment opportunities for local youth and builds pathways to future careers. We collaborate with local high schools and colleges to bring individual placements into the park, where they work alongside permanent staff while supporting visitor engagement and community-focused initiatives.
The CVA will have the opportunity to engage with all divisions of LNHP and participate in job shadowing in areas of interest to support professional growth and continued learning. LOWE collaborates with numerous partners across the city, and the CVA will gain experience working with these organizations. Stewardship activities will involve hands-on engagement with volunteers from the city, neighboring communities, local organizations, veterans’ groups, church groups, and college organizations. Additionally, the CVA will collaborate with the Environmental Youth Task Force, a local volunteer youth program supported through a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust, Massachusetts Audubon, and Mill City Grows.
The CVA will assist partners in evaluating and implementing innovative recruitment strategies for the annual Folk Festival, a three-day event that engages over 1,000 volunteers and attracts more than 100,000 visitors to Lowell. This role will involve developing creative recruitment initiatives, including contributions to the festival webpage, social media campaigns, and other strategies to effectively engage and attract new volunteers.
