Program Summary: The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
Position Summary:
This position’s primary role is to support SCC's Youth programming. The coordinator will support SCC's youth programming, with a focus on supporting rural communities in the Four Corners including Towaoc, Shiprock and surrounding communities. The coordinator will support outreach, recruitment, hiring and relationship building within those communities throughout the Four Corners. Another primary component will be to support a 10-day trip/project hitch in the Grand Canyon, in collaboration with ALCC (Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps). The first part of this position will include the coordination, logistics, and preparation for the Grand Canyon River Trip, which will take place during the summer of 2026. The position will support logistics of our remote Youth Crews, assisting with transportation planning for youth, finding central locations, carpools, and creating accessible options for youth to join programs. The final component of this position will be creating partner relationships, project development and long-term sustainability through supported grant writing. This position is an opportunity to make a difference in young peoples’ lives and directly impact communities of southwest Colorado. SCC’s youth program serves about 80 local youth ages 14-18 a year and completes various conservation-based projects across the region. In 2026, SCC will run 3 sessions of Youth Crews based in Towaoc, Shiprock, and surrounding communities.
Outcomes & Functions of Position:
Recruiting and Onboarding of Corps Members

Collaborate with the Youth Program Coordinator and Manager in the recruitment, onboarding and follow up needed for members

Conduct outreach for Youth Program events.

Create new partnerships to increase awareness of SCC programming in Native communities.
Project Development and Partner Retention

Work with existing partners to advocate for fee-for-service work

Seek out new partnerships that have alignment with SCC, and build long term relationships

Oversee site visits and project development for new partners, ensuring work is within youth crew scope

Complete end-of-season debriefs with partners to ensure needs are met and plan for following year work

Support Youth Crews throughout the season – technical, behavioral and mentorship support of crews
Trip Preparation and Coordination

Facilitate paperwork and coordination of the Grand Canyon Trip for the Crew participants and their families.

Coordinate with ALCC to understand and assist in all Grand Canyon Trip needs, preparation, and logistics. This may include travel to an ALCC Office for in-person coordination time.

Support ALCC Staff in setting expectations for working with Youth Crews in advance of the Trip.

Build rapport with members of the trip with lessons and field visits in June.

Education and Curriculum planning, including creating lesson plans to be incorporated into Youth hitches

Ensure crews are both supported and prepared to maintain safety, program integrity, and quality projects in the field. Both office and field operations are required and a flexible schedule is a must!
Other Development:

With assistance from Senior Program Director and Youth Programs manager, seek out and apply for funding for long term sustainability of Youth Programs

Collaborate with ALCC where appropriate

Assist youth program staff in the planning and implementation of crew leader training season, including youth crew leader training.
