Purpose:

Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with internships and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. In partnership with the Cibola National Forest, CCNM will host a Recreation Technician Individual Placement.

The USDA Forest Service has an overall mission of “Caring for the Land and Serving People.” The Sandia Ranger District is 99,616 acres directly adjacent to and east of Albuquerque. Given its proximity to Albuquerque, the Sandia Mountains have always been a focus for many outdoor recreation activities. As a result, the mountains have experienced overuse because they are a quick and easy getaway from the city and the summer heat.

This Recreation Technician Individual Placement (IP) is an hourly internship position that will support the operations of the Sandia Ranger District’s recreation department. The IP will assist with various recreation maintenance projects focusing on the improvement of the local trail system.

The position’s focus will be in four areas – 1) maintaining and cleaning campgrounds, trail heads, and other recreation facilities; 2) sharing conservation messages with the District’s local communities and visitors; 3) conducting educational patrols in designated and dispersed recreation areas on motorized and non-motorized routes; and 4) performing basic repairs and maintenance of facilities.

The IP will be able to develop various skills needed for future recreation management positions. They will also be embedded with the Developed Recreation and Trail Crew members as well as being exposed to other District programs.

Description of Duties:

· Recreation Site Stewardship

o Perform basic site cleaning to include cleaning vault toilets, emptying trash, and picking up trash within the site.

o Interact with visitors and provide information about the area; learn frequently asked questions and information about the areas; understand proper approach with visitors.

o Assist visitors with paying applicable site fees and placing reminders on vehicles who have not paid.

o Clear walkways with blower or broom.

· Recreation Site Maintenance

o Work independently or with supervisors to perform basic recreation site maintenance tasks.

o Repair or replace signs, fences, gates, doors, and other projects as needed.

o Removal of graffiti as needed.

o Painting as needed.

· Snow and Vegetation Control within Recreation Sites

o Work independently or with supervisors to maintain clear access to sites and amenities.

o Use proper tools and equipment to maintain access to recreation site amenities in snow.

o Assist with plowing up to 9” of snow with plow truck.

o Use proper tools and equipment to clear vegetation as need to maintain line of site to signs and to keep walkways and amenities clear.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a background check.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid U.S Driver’s License - Drivers must be over 21 or have had a license for at least 3 years.
  • Resume includes details that demonstrate basic competency for training to perform project work.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Previous experience preferred but not expected.

Time requirements:

  • This position is expected to work 40 hours each week, but exact schedules may vary

Orientation and Training:

  • IP will receive a CCNM program orientation during the first week of project
  • Mentorship and training in a field environment
  • Review of recreation regulations and handbooks
  • Safety training and proper personal protective (PPE) use
  • Mentorship in basic tool and equipment use
  • In-field training
  • Certification for towing a trailer and operating machinery or equipment as needed
  • Training budget of $500

Additional Position and Community Information

· The Sandia Ranger District is directly adjacent to the city of Albuquerque, which provides a substantial amount of housing options and access to various amenities. It will be important for IP to have a personal vehicle for use during off time.

Benefits:

  • Hourly Wage: $20
  • Healthcare Coverage: the participant will be eligible for the Conservation Legacy health benefits program after completing a 60-day probation period. The participant will be required to make a benefit selection prior to their eligibility date.
  • Paid time off will be a lump sum of 48 hours; Sick Leave accrual of 1 hour for every 21 hours worked
