Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with Zion National Park will host a Recreation and Interpretation Individual Placement.
This Recreation and Outreach Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will collaborate with staff from the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services, including Museum Collection staff, to continue sharing the history of recreation in the Zion National Park area. This position will assist with creating interpretive and educational products on the visitation of the “Grand Loop” of southern Utah and northern Arizona, including Bryce Canyon National Park, Cedar Breaks Monument, Pipe Spring National Monument, Zion National Park, and the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Additionally, this position will assist with creating and conducting NPS staff training to build institutional knowledge of this recreational history in Zion to incorporate into regular interpretive and educational programing.
The project will provide the Recreation and Outreach Assistant with valuable experience in resources, facilities, and visitor services and operations. The work of this project will improve the visitor experience and visitor services at Zion National Park by sharing the history of recreation in the Zion area through education, interpretation, and outreach products.
Description of Duties:

- Collaborate with park partners and park museum staff to learn about the history of recreation in the Zion National Park area.
- Create interpretive and educational products on the visitation of the “Grand Loop” of southern Utah and northern Arizona.
- Identify needs for waysides, interpretive programing, educational programming to enhance the visitor experience of the recreational history of the “Grand Loop”. This includes content for the park website and social media outlets.
- Create and conduct NPS staff training to build institutional knowledge of the recreational history in Zion.
- Identify important history and connections to the America’s 250 to be featured in interpretive media and NPS staff training.
- Work with Visual information staff, Interpretation Staff, and Educational Staff to create products that help tell the story of recreation in the Zion National Park area.
- Support Education and Interpretation programming in Zion National Park. This includes helping staff contact stations, rove busy trails, and presenting interpretive programs (formal and informal) for the general public and youth (though Zion’s Junior Ranger program). These programs will connect all park visitors to Zion’s Natural and Cultural Resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned related to project. Other duties may include shadowing other park staff working within natural and cultural resources, visitor use management, park transportation management and park messaging and nonpersonal services.
Qualifications:

- The successful applicant must be reliable, punctual, and self-motivated.
- Strong verbal and communication skills.
- Self-starter, creative, strategic, and resourceful.
- Must be comfortable and proficient speaking to large groups of people, including children.
- Must be able to stand and walk for extensive periods, and in some cases, over rough surfaces or inclines carrying backpacks, tools, etc.
- Must be able to work full days outside in high or low temperatures, or adverse weather conditions.
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
Preferred Qualifications:

- An educational background in history, archeology, cultural studies, education, or related subjects is recommended. Undergraduate/Graduate degree preferred.
- Applications should have experience with research and writing.
- Applicants with experience teaching others are preferred.
Additional Position and Community Information

- Zion National Park is located in Springdale, Utah. This is a rural area with limited amenities in the immediate area. A local grocery, hardware store, library, and medical clinic are available in the town of Springdale, which is a 5-minute drive from park housing. The town of St. George is about one hour away from park housing and includes amenities typically found in a larger city, including a variety of grocery and commercial stores, medical services, movie theater, climbing gym, etc.
- In-park housing is available for this position. All housing units include a shared kitchen and common space, laundry, and private bedroom. Wi-Fi is not available in park housing.
- Personal vehicle recommended.

Time Requirements:

- This position is expected to serve 40 hours each week, but exact service schedules may vary.
- Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:

- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive Interpretive and facilitation training, De-Escalation Training, training/shadowing NPS staff from various divisions, including shadowing and observing other interpretive rangers' programs.
- $5,500.00 Professional Development Fund for Travel and Training
Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
