Position Title: Hayti Promise: Community Conservation Program Coordinator (AmeriCorps)

Conservation Legacy Program: Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC)

Site Location: North Carolina

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: Open until filled
  • End Date: Available until December 2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hours

Purpose:

The Hayti Promise: Community Conservation Program Coordinator will serve as a key leader in the launch and facilitation of the Hayti Promise Youth Corps, a bold new initiative along Durham’s historic Fayetteville Street Corridor. This AmeriCorps position blends conservation service, cultural preservation, and workforce development through hands-on projects and deep community engagement.

Over the course of this 11-month term, the Coordinator will help develop and implement conservation programming, including environmental restoration, beautification, tree planting, and garden revitalization projects. The Coordinator will also support participant recruitment, training, and mentorship while fostering relationships with stakeholders across Durham.

Part-time options may be available during the academic year.

Description of Duties:

Program Coordination & Implementation

  • Support the planning, recruitment, and coordination of Youth Conservation Crew (YCC) members and adult program participants
  • Assist with project planning and execution, ensuring alignment with conservation, cultural preservation, and workforce development goals
  • Assist in developing and maintaining program schedules, work plans, and reporting structures
  • Facilitating volunteer workdays

Participant Support & Training

  • Assist in recruiting, screening, and onboarding program participants
  • Assist with training sessions and workshops in conservation skills, trades, and workforce readiness
  • Ensure safety standards are met during all service projects, providing guidance and mentorship as needed

Community Engagement & Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Serve as a liaison between CCNC, Hayti Promise CDC, and Durham community organizations
  • Organize local volunteer events, community learning sessions, and youth leadership opportunities
  • Contribute to sustainability and future planning efforts for the Hayti Promise Youth Corps

Communications & Impact Reporting

  • Develop marketing and outreach materials to recruit participants and promote program activities
  • Document program successes through impact stories, photos, and reports
  • Assist in tracking key performance metrics related to participant engagement, skill development, and project outcomes

Communication

  • Practice inclusive and thoughtful behavior in building rapport with program participants, site stakeholders, and program staff
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with program staff and site personnel
  • Report data in online systems in a timely and accurate manner
  • Provide constructive evaluation of program elements (trainings, mentors, community liaisons, reports)

Program Participation Requirements

  • Demonstrate regular, timely attendance and adherence to hours as scheduled
  • Commit to service for the service term of 11 months
  • Participate in all required AmeriCorps-sponsored training sessions, meetings, and travel as necessary
  • Actively participate in service projects

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort navigating digital systems
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle record check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Durham’s Hayti community, including its history, culture, and current revitalization efforts
  • Experience working with youth, young adults, and/or grassroots community initiatives
  • Strong coordination, communication, and leadership skills
  • Comfort working outdoors in adverse conditions and leading hands-on activities
  • Passion for community-driven conservation

Physical Requirements

  • In-person attendance at meetings.
  • Some travel may be required. (Travel expenses will be covered by the program.)
  • This position requires light to moderate lifting, bending, stooping, pulling, kneeling, carrying, and use of hand tools up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, such as wind, rain, high or low temperatures, on challenging terrain for up to 8 hours at a time.

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395.00
  • Living Allowance of $730 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
