Position Title: Zion National Park Interpretation and Community Engagement Assistant - Americorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps

Site Location: Zion National Park-Springdale, Utah

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: September 2025
  • End Date: December 2025
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 450hrs - 12 weeks

Purpose:

This project will help the mission of Zion National Park by providing a space for youth to engage with the visiting public. There are 36+ tribal groups who consider this area their Ancestral homelands or lands to which they have deep connections. One of the goals of this internship would be to develop a more complete representation of the human story of this park through programming and work with our partners.

The intern would work with the park’s Interpretation and Education staff to assist with provide accurate information showcasing the park’s legacy. Formal programs would highlight the variety of human stories represented within the majestic landscape of the park. The intern would collaborate not only with staff in their immediate workgroup but may also work with members of our Cultural Resources team. These collaborations may extend to support projects with local partners and stakeholders.

Interns will develop their own interpretive program with support from division leads and supervisors. There may be additional opportunities for the interns to assist with other projects in other divisions. All such activities would benefit the management missions to preserve the natural and historical significance of the park.

Description of Duties:

  • Support operations at the Zion Visitor Center and Human History Museum. This will include staffing busy contact stations, providing general information about the park, resources, guidance, and orientation to visitors.
  • Visitors at these locations include the wide variety of ages and backgrounds from across the United States, as well as significant amounts of visitors from foreign countries. This support may include giving formal interpretive programs and/or staffing a Jr Ranger table.
  • Assist in creating new digital media for the park's webpage and/or social media accounts.
  • Assist with projects as needed with our Cultural Resources team.

Qualifications:

Zion National Park is looking for enthusiastic, reliable, and responsible candidates with great public speaking skills and a positive attitude. An educational background in history, archeology, geology, biology, ecology, cultural studies, education, or related subjects is recommended. Undergraduate/Graduate degree preferred but not required.

  • The successful applicant must be reliable, punctual, and self-motivated.
  • Must be comfortable and proficient speaking to large groups of people, including children.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extensive periods, and in some cases, over rough surfaces or inclines carrying backpacks, tools, etc.
  • Must be able to work full days outside in high or low temperatures, or adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving steep and windy roads.
  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
    Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Time Requirements:

Typically, this position is expected to serve September 2025 to December 2025, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.

  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,956.35
  • Living Allowance of $600.00 per week.
  • Additional Benefit of $100.00 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
