Purpose:
- Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps (ALCC) engages motivated young adults, ages 17 - 30, to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the Western United States as an Americorps participant. Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation, historic preservation, and local environmental service projects. ALCC provides opportunities for members to learn about and connect with the environment, issues surrounding conservation, and local Indigenous values.This is an Americorps position. ALCC crews work in a variety of National Parks, National Forests, and other public areas. Selected members are placed on a crew which will then collaborate to perform project work. ALCC is a non-residential program and does not offer housing. Gear and equipment rental is available upon request.
Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps (ALCC) is a corps program based out offices in Acoma Pueblo, Navajo Nation, Zuni Pueblo, Hopi-Kykotsmovi, and Albuquerque. ALCC originally began in 2008 at Pueblo of Acoma, NM as a program model nestled in Southwest Conservation Corps, another program of Conservation Legacy.Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps established itself as its own corps in 2021. Our program strives to cultivate a new generation of local land stewards. We partner with tribal communities and land managers to accomplish impactful and lasting conservation service projects. ALCC works to build and support sustainable public access, historical interpretation and ecological health. Crews and interns have being working on projects from historical preservation, traditional agriculture, chainsaw crews, hiking clubs, stream restoration, fencing, trail construction, and more. ALCC also aims to incorporate traditional culture and language as part of crew lifestyle and project work.
Description of Duties:
Participation and Expedition Behavior
- Work effectively as a member of a team
- Contribute to a safe learning environment; no harassment of others for any reason
- Participate in all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training and national service
- Effectively communicate and discuss ideas and concerns with leaders, crew, and staff
- Learn skills and apply them to effectively carry out service work requirements
- Appropriately represent the program and community while on project
Safety and Judgement
- Perceive and effectively communicate environmental and work hazards with crew and leader
- Effectively perceive, understand, and follow direction
- Stay alert and focused while traveling and working in varied weather conditions
- Act with compassion toward crew members, leaders, and staff
- If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self-administering medication, without the assistance of others
Environmental Ethics
- Learn and practice Leave No Trace principles
- Adhere to land management protocols put in place by ALCC & project partners
Outdoor Skills and Fitness
- Learn and safely perform fundamental outdoor living/travel and work skills as appropriate to the project
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 17 years of age
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve 10hr days, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will attend 40-hour orientation covering all aspects of Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps and Conservation Legacy.
- Member will receive trainings relative to their crew focus/type.
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $3,697.50
- Living Allowance of $480.00 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
