Position Title: GIS Watershed Outreach Specialist– AmeriCorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards, in partnership with THE EASTERN PA COALITION FOR ABANDONED MINE RECLAMATION (EPCAMR), are seeking two service members to provide additional technical assistance to support their mission.

This support involves collecting data monitoring results to assess the overall health of watersheds in areas impacted by abandoned mines and abandoned mine drainage (AMD). The service members will provide education and outreach opportunities, conduct community cleanups, support community gardens in blighted neighborhoods, write grants in partnership with community groups to serve the EPCAMR Region and connect partners with resources. They will also scan, catalog, geo-reference, digitize, mosaic, and create educational materials to inform the communities and youth on ways they can become engaged as volunteers with EPCAMR as environmental stewards. The main goal of this project work is to help clean up and restore their watersheds and improve the cultural, recreational, economic, and social well-being in the EPCAMR region.


Description of Duties:

Duties include but are not limited to the following.

· Encourage the construction of community gardens to alleviate food insecurity needs in coalfield communities.

· Work with interested and existing coalfield community groups and organizations to construct, develop, plant and harvest food sources.

· Support affordable and accessible housing development in coalfield communities.

· Provide meaningful watershed educational experiences to youth in underserved school districts within the EPCAMR region.

· Develop watershed resource maps to identify economic data, demographics, workforce development agencies, and community college and trade school locations.

· Develop community surveys and polls on EPCAMR social media.

· Scan and catalog surface and underground mine maps.

· Review existing EPCAMR Partnership Database and retrieve additional information on partners.

· Identify local financial support organizations and grant opportunities.

· Assist EPCAMR staff with monitoring of water quality, AMD, and stream flows.

· Review suggested and approved ideas, goals, tasks and objectives approved by the EPCAMR Strategic Planning Committee and Education/Science Committees.


Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • College Graduate with a Certification in ArcGIS
  • Fundraising/Grant Writing Experience
  • Communications Skills
  • Public Speaking and Community Organization Experience

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve a 35-to-40-hour workday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
