Job Description

Position Summary:

The PRN Technician Supervisor provides operational leadership and oversight of the hospital’s PRN Veterinary Technician program to ensure consistent staffing coverage and high-quality patient care across services. This working supervisor coordinates scheduling, manages resources, supervises and develops PRN staff, and fills clinical shifts as needed to maintain seamless operations. The role exists to support fluctuating patient volumes, maintain service continuity, and enhance technician skill development while collaborating with hospital leadership and clinical teams.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Oversee and coordinate the PRN Veterinary Technician program, including scheduling, staffing assignments, and coverage across hospital services to ensure uninterrupted patient care and operational continuity during fluctuating demand.

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate PRN technicians, providing performance feedback, coaching, and professional development to maintain a highly skilled relief workforce capable of supporting clinical services.

  • Deploy PRN staff strategically based on hospital needs, prioritizing coverage gaps, adjusting assignments in real time, and ensuring equitable distribution of shifts to maintain efficiency and service stability.

  • Provide direct patient care as a working supervisor, taking clinical shifts across service areas to ensure adequate staffing, support complex cases, and model best practices in veterinary technical care.

  • Design and implement training and onboarding protocols for PRN technicians, ensuring competency across specialties, compliance with hospital standards, and readiness to support multiple departments.

  • Monitor program performance and resource utilization, including timekeeping, staffing patterns, and operational metrics, to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost control.

  • Serve as liaison between PRN staff, department supervisors, and hospital leadership, facilitating communication, resolving conflicts, and aligning staffing resources with institutional priorities.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including participation in hospital initiatives, policy development, and special projects that support technician services and patient care operations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification or equivalent credential (CVT, LVT, etc.)

  • Pre-employment criminal background check

  • Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

Supervision:

Position supervises approximately 15-20 hourly employees (State Classified: Veterinary Technology I, II, III; Admin Pro: Technician Support I, II, III)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Minimum of 3 years of veterinary experience with demonstrated proficiency in animal handling, client communication, and basic lab procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Proficiency in veterinary technical skills and ability to mentor staff

  • Experience with hospital scheduling and staff training

Salary Range

$60,000 - $70,000
