Job Description

Position Summary:

Under management from CSU Health Network Medical Services, the Medical Clinic at the CSU Mountain Campus provides onsite acute first aid and pre-hospital care to patients for minor injuries and illnesses on a walk-in basis. The Medical Clinic has designated clinic hours and 24-hour medical assistance for students and guests with acute and emergent concerns. Access to after-hours mental health professionals ensures the support of students and guests with behavioral health concerns. This position assists in the delivery of safe healthcare to university students, staff, and guests.

This position is a temporary, PRN Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) that will work at the CSU Mountain Campus Medical Clinic for 22 weeks (5/15/26– 10/16/26), approximately 20 hours per week. This position reports directly to the Nurse Manager of Specialty Services at the CSU Health Network Fort Collins campus and will work in close collaboration with the CSU Mountain Campus Leadership Team to carry out the Essential Job Duties.

CSU Mountain Campus:

The CSU Mountain Campus is nestled in a beautiful, secluded mountain valley at an elevation of 9,000 ft. (2,743 m) covering 1,600-acres, home to the onsite Medical Clinic. Established in 1914, the Mountain Campus serves as a destination campus for research and education, local, national, and international conferences. Programs and activities at the Mountain Campus shape and inspire current and future leaders’ lives through learning and immersion experiences in the Rocky Mountains, and facilitate research addressing critical issues in ecology, environmental science, and natural resources. The Mountain Campus operates from mid-May to mid-October each year, and is located 53 miles west of Fort Collins, approximately a 2-hour drive, the last 16 miles of which are on a gravel road. The campus is adjacent to the northern border of Rocky Mountain National Park and shares boundaries with Roosevelt National Forest. Abundant opportunities exist for hiking/backpacking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and fishing.

Office Hours: The EMT works in the office 5-6 hours per day. Typical office hours are 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM daily, but are subject to change to meet the needs of campus guests.

On-Site Availability: In addition to specified office hours, this position is expected to respond to emergent healthcare needs:

  • Within 20 minutes

  • 24/7, unless other coverage has been arranged

  • Lodging: The Mountain Campus provides a cabin (341 sq ft) with two bedrooms (one room has a double bed and the other bedroom has a bunk bed), kitchen, refrigerator, microwave, toilet, porch and cabin wi-fi booster. Showers are available in a staff shower house. On-site laundry is available. Housing may require a shared space and coordination with additional staff.

  • Meals: Meals are provided for the EMT and one guest with no extra cost. Meal tickets can be purchased in the office if additional guests are with you.

  • Pets: No pets permitted.

Activities: Hiking, fishing, mountain biking, trail running, rock climbing, nature photography, or lounging in a hammock with a good book are just some of the many activities employees can enjoy during their time in the picturesque CSU Mountain Campus setting outside of office hours.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Perform patient assessments in accordance with clinic protocols and EMT scope of practice; collect, document, and communicate accurate findings to support RN-led evaluation, treatment planning, and wellness promotion in a remote setting.

  • Deliver emergency and urgent medical care, including wound and burn management, injury treatment, medication administration as delegated, standing order execution (e.g., point-of-care testing, medication dispensing), and pre-hospital stabilization; activate EMS when escalation is required.

  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, and outcomes in designated medical record systems, ensuring continuity of care and compliance with documentation standards.

  • Coordinate closely with nursing leadership and the Medical Director to report complex or deteriorating cases, obtain clinical direction, and facilitate referrals to off-site medical services as needed.

  • Conduct public health screenings and point-of-care testing, monitor infection control concerns, and report findings in alignment with clinic and public health guidelines.

  • Provide education and training to staff on emergency response procedures and equipment (e.g., First Aid, EpiPen, Narcan), maintaining required certifications such as Wilderness First Aid.

  • Support campus-wide health and safety operations through ongoing communication, participation in meetings and drills, and collaboration during emergency activations.

  • Oversee daily clinic operations, including adherence to safety protocols, equipment readiness, medication counts, inventory management, supply ordering, secure lab result transmission, and maintenance of 24/7 communication systems in remote environments.

  • Promote and safeguard the health and safety of elementary-age students by providing immediate first aid care and safe medication administration in compliance with physician orders, district policy, EMT scope, and state regulations.

  • Maintain current knowledge of clinic policies and procedures; actively engage in organizational communications (e.g., Outlook, Teams, OneDrive), and participate in regular coordination meetings with Nurse Manager(s) to ensure effective clinic operations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).

  • Valid Driver’s License – Must have a current, valid driver's license to drive to and from CSU Mountain Campus from city of residence. Mileage will be reimbursed per CSU guidelines.

  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials - Must be willing and able to use, handle, or be exposed to hazardous materials with training.

  • Special Requirements - The CSU Health Network follows CDC guidelines for Employee Health in a healthcare setting, including proof of vaccinations. Employees must show proof of compliance/willingness to comply with the start date.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of state-approved EMT program

  • Successful completion of National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians written and hands-on exam

  • Possession of current EMT license through the State of Colorado Department of Public Health

  • CDPHE Oath/CE requirement completion

  • Current certification in AHA approved Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Three years of EMT experience in direct patient care

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in remote, wilderness, or camp nursing setting or urgent care

  • Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT certification

  • Experience working independently using treatment protocols and guidelines to provide patient care

  • Experience providing clinical services to college student population and/or adolescents

  • Experience assisting with mental health needs and other needs as arise

  • Experience managing urgent care and patient education for individuals with anaphylaxis

  • Excellent clinical judgment and critical thinking skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, verbal and written communication skills
