Job Summary
One Wildlife/Forestry Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide entry-level training and experience on a range of natural resources projects supporting the Natural Resources Management (NRM) program at Fort AP Hill, VA.
The technician will provide support to the Fort A.P. Hill Natural Resources Program under through completion of fish and wildlife surveys and forest management projects. This position is not-to-exceed 260 working days. This role supports a wide range of wildlife, habitat, and land-management activities, including survey work, prescribed burning, trail maintenance, and biological data collection. It involves assisting with fish and wildlife monitoring, GIS mapping, event support, and food plot management. This position also provides technical assistance to the public and collaborates across Fort A.P. Hill on tasks such as invasive species control and forestry support.
Required Qualifications:
Experience performing wildlife demographic and monitoring surveys.
Experience conducting vegetation surveys, including rare plant monitoring.
Experience performing timber inventories.
Strong computer skills word processing, database entry, and data retrieval.
Experience working on a military installation.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Working towards an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
• Ability to operate tractors and other heavy farming equipment.
• GPS operating experience.
• Preference will be given to
1) those who have prior experience working at Fort A.P. Hill and
2) those that already reside in Virginia.
This position is onsite, and the Wildlife/Forestry Technician must have reliable transportation to the site. The ECDP is unable to provide relocation or housing stipends.

CEMML’s Early-career Development Program provides students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals the opportunity to learn more about land management in the military and federal lands context. ECDP positions are the perfect opportunity to build connections, be mentored, and gain hands-on experience. Working under the guidance of seasoned natural or cultural resource professionals, participants learn practical applications and techniques. Participants contribute to conservation efforts and increase their understanding of the regulatory framework and the complexities of managing natural and cultural resources.
Fort A.P. Hill encompasses 76,000 acres in Caroline County, Virginia and provides military training in explosives, combat, navigation and orienteering, demolition, engineering, parachuting, equipment drops, weapons use and other requirements. In compliance with Army Regulation 200-1, Environmental Protection and Enhancement and the installation INRMP, Fort A.P. Hill manages its wildlife resources to provide and maintain exceptional wildlife health and ecosystems and to provide recreational opportunities with hunting, trapping and fishing.

Essential Job Duties:
Fieldwork
Conduct field work, which can include management for wildlife, vegetation, invasive species, threatened and endangered species, wetlands, forests, and/or outdoor recreation areas, GPS data collection, field mapping, photography, public outreach and/or education, etc. Duties may include but are not limited to:
Assisting in food plot management and planting, fertilization by utilizing agricultural tractors, chainsaws, planting implements, and/or off-road vehicles (4x4)
Assisting with fish stocking, prescribed burning, soil sampling, and trail maintenance/clearing
Conducting non-game and game wildlife surveys by researching and designing new surveys and improve existing surveys methods.
Assisting with a variety of surveys including fish and wildlife populations, threatened and endangered species, and habitat surveys.
Assisting with prescribed burning activities and wildland fire response.
Administrative
Office-based tasks can include data entry and management, public outreach, preparing site forms, writing technical reports, compliance documents, database and data management, spatial analysis, and/or preparing correspondence and other documentation.
Other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass. You will need to possess a Real ID or passport
Must be able to work long hours independently in remote, rugged field conditions under harsh weather conditions.

Salary Range
