Job Description
Essential Job Duties (5 maximum)
Conducting early detection surveys (EDS), which consist of presence/absence surveys of all taxa (small mammals, arthropods, herpetofauna, and plants) on military training and staging areas.
Assisting with the management of coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) and high-risk invasive weeds. CRB work includes baiting, removal, trap maintenance, and breeding site surveys, whereas vegetation management includes mechanical and chemical control methods of species such as skunk vine and itchgrass.
Conducting biosecurity inspections of military cargo for non-training events in support of US Navy Joint Region Marianas to ensure that military vehicles, equipment, and supplies comply with military sanitation guidelines.
Recording and entering field data using smartphones and computer tablets.
Operating gas and battery power tools including bush cutters, chainsaws, and hedgers.
Conditions of Employment
Must be able to work in a culturally diverse office and respect all Team members.
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Must be willing to submit for NACI background check to obtain a DoD Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) card.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to work in-person at the Asan office, Guam.
Minimum of a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Knowledge of invasive species on Guam.
Must be able to work during nights, weekends, and holidays whenever necessary.
Must be capable of walking several consecutive miles carrying gear of up to 30 pounds and performing light manual labor in a hot tropical environment, often windy/rainy and on uneven terrain. Work is often conducted on hot, paved surfaces with little shade provided.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting fieldwork and accurately recording, entering, and proofing data.
At least 3-6 months of work experience with agriculture, invasive species-control, or natural resources.
Experience conducting invasive species management utilizing chemical, cultural, biological and/or mechanical control techniques.
Experience using smart phones or other devices to collect or manage information for work related tasks.
Experience operating gas and battery power tools and other mechanical or hand tools.
Experience applying herbicide and/or insecticide.
Ability to take photographs and collect samples of plants, insects, and animals for identification.
Familiar with DoD/Navy environmental, biosecurity, and safety regulations.
