Description of Work Unit
The Utility Services work unit exists to provide, manage, operate, and maintain utility service for the University. Utilities managed by this work unit include: electric, domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm water, natural gas, steam, chilled water, and distributed heating and cooling generation. Unit activities also include master planning for utilities, design review, utility construction inspection, customer allocation, forecasting, billing, support through relevant expertise of other Facilities Management work units, and liaison with utility providers.

This position performs installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of building steam piping systems, condensate equipment, and building hot water heat exchanger equipment. This position also assists in maintenance and repair support for all central and distributed plant and system equipment within District Energy.

Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must demonstrate in the application materials:

Experience Only:
  • Three (3) years of full time, progressively responsible steam/pipefitting AND steam system maintenance and/or mechanical experience such as troubleshooting and maintenance on steam systems, steam traps, steam heat exchangers and use of pipe threading tools.
OR
Education and Experience:
  • A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or progressively responsible steam/pipefitting AND steam system maintenance and/or mechanical experience such as troubleshooting and maintenance on steam systems, steam traps, steam heat exchangers and use of pipe threading tools equal to three (3) years *Please note, unofficial or official transcripts must be attached if utilizing education to meet the minimum qualifications.

The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:


  • Welding certification for shielded metal arc welding(SMAW), 6G,E6010 root, E7018 fill and cap, prepared, welded, and tested in accordance with the requirements of Section IX of the ASME code
  • Pipe welding and metal fabrication experience
  • Pipefitting and welding experience
  • Steam system experience
  • Chilled water system experience
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) 6G experience
  • Brazing, softsoldering, and silversoldering experience
  • Steamboiler maintenance experience
  • Underground piping installation experience
  • Pipe rigging experience
  • HDPE pipe fusion experience
  • Construction experience, including print reading and isometric drawing experience
  • Directly related state service experience
Essential Job Duties
Job Duty Category Building Steam and Hot Water Heat Exchanger Maintenance
Duty/Responsibility
Responsible for the operation, installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of all building-side direct steam heat and heat exchanger systems providing space heating water, including all related steam and condensate piping, fittings, traps, pressure reducing stations, accessories, and condensate moving equipment. Responsible for directly interacting and responding to customers for steam heating-related concerns.

Assists with problem investigation, major repairs, breakdowns, and planned and corrective maintenance of all equipment in central and distributed heating and cooling plants. Assist with material selection and procurement. Assist with coordination of projects.
