Description of Work Unit
The Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship is a unit in the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University, located in Fort Collins, Colorado. The department consists of biological and social scientists, houses a variety of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and offers a variety of programs in forest and rangeland ecology and management.
Position Summary
The Davis Forest Health Lab at Colorado State University is seeking a Research Associate for the purpose of assisting several projects that include the handling, cataloguing, and processing of large quantities of biological samples. Specifically, the Research Associate will work on: (1) processing of wood samples for analysis of non structural carbohydrates, (2) processing insect specimen samples to record different species groups, (3) record and curate project datasets, and (4) assist with the management of laboratory activities and provide support to graduate students on an as-needed basis.
Required Job Qualifications
  • A BS in a conservation- or ecology-related discipline.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Prior experience sampling insects in the field using netting techniques, with particular emphasis on beetles and/or bees
  • Ability to identify multiple groups of insects at a broad taxonomic level (eg, Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera).
  • Prior experience with growing and attending native or non-native plants in a greenhouse setting
  • Prior experience identifying, extracting, and handling the nests of cavity-nesting bee species
  • Prior experience documenting and movement of bees and recording their activity
  • Competency with recording and entering data, managing datasets, and applying quality control for datasets
  • Experience with the processing of wood samples, with emphasis on sorting, labeling, and weighing stored samples
