Description of Work Unit | The Equine Reproduction Laboratory is part of the Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. The CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory has developed leading-edge equine reproduction techniques for the equine industry for over 45 years. Techniques such as collection of semen and artificial insemination, recovery and transfer of equine embryos, shipping cooled semen, and shipping cooled embryos are now routine in the equine industry, due in large part to the research, education, and outreach efforts of the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory. The Advanced Reproductive Techniques (ART) program within the ERL has pioneered and continues to lead the way for specialized technologies such as oocyte aspiration, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, post-mortem ovary harvesting for sperm injection and oocyte/embryo culturing methodologies. The ART team focuses on research involving aged mare reproductive improvements, the roles that obesity and metabolic disorders play on pregnancy and improving current oocyte and embryo culturing techniques. |
Position Summary | The Animal Technician will oversee the care for horses housed at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory. The primary duties of this position are to: 1) ensure that all horses are fed, watered and cared for as directed by the ERL Farm Manager, ERL Director and the faculty; 2) engage in cleaning and maintenance of facilities as needed for proper care of horses; 3) provide mentorship and set an example for the hourly staff to insure all horse-care protocols are followed to keep all horses safe and healthy; 4) report to the ERL Farm Manager any deficits or concerns with equipment or supplies; and 5) be able to use farm equipment such as a skid steer and dump trailer. Specifically, this position needs to make sure the animals are safe and healthy, which requires observation of animals, facilities and equipment during daily activities. During an emergency this position works in coordination with the Foothills animal managers for evacuation of and relocation of animals depending on the situation. This position requires practical horse experience. |
