Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary
Position will lead field crews for the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) Fort McCoy on natural resources projects to include invasive species, wildlife and occasional threatened and endangered species projects. Position will also work independently at times or be part of a group. Position will assist in the training of and leading of field crew members for invasive species treatment and survey methods, mapping of native flora, collect data and will have strong plant species and animal identification skills. Position will complete tasks assigned by supervisor on projects designated by Fort McCoy Federal staff and in compliance with Fort McCoy Integrated Natural Resources Plan, Invasive Species Management Plan and Endangered Resources Management Plan.

A high percentage of time will be put towards completing field work projects as directed by Biologists and the Natural Resources Supervisor on a variety of projects. In addition to leading field crews, the position will assist in game harvest registration to include deer aging, harvest data collection, game species surveys and hunter assistance. Position will operate heavy equipment for habitat and invasive species projects and conduct routine maintenance. Additional time will be spent as a prescribed fire field crew member (RXCM) for natural resources and range/safety prescribed fire units on Fort McCoy. Position will be delegated to complete work summaries and reports as needed. Position will entail occasional night and weekend work to conduct surveys and game species harvest registration. Position will operate UTV, Skid steer, Tractor, Fecon Mower, Chainsaw and other power tools. Position will coordinate with range control on accessing areas daily and ensure field crews are working in approved locations, using appropriate herbicide mixes and conducting proper herbicide application methods.


Required Job Qualifications
• BA/BS in wildlife management, forestry, conservation biology, horticulture, or related applied science, with emphasis on resource management.
• Two years of relevant experience in the natural resource field.
• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a State of Wisconsin certification for herbicide application, and certification as a wildland firefighter.
• The position requires the ability to work outdoors in rough terrain and inclement weather and to lift 50-70 pounds repetitively.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

• Category 6 (Natural Areas and Right of Ways) herbicide applicators license with use experience.
• Experience with wildland or prescribed fire with FFT2 or RXCM qualifications.
• Experience with game registration and hunter assistance.
• Experience conducting wildlife habitat management practices.
• Experience operating, hauling and conducting routine maintenance on equipment such as tractor, skid steer, UTV, large trailers.

Essential Duties

Train and lead field crews on various natural resources projects as specified within CESU agreement to include mapping of wild lupine populations, treatment of invasive species, mapping of invasive species populations and occasionally conducting habitat management projects. Coordinate with range control on access on a daily basis for project work and area access. Maintaining a current year herbicide applicators license

Utilize Arc GIS, Microsoft Excel and Access databases to create maps and enter field data. Position would be required to write short work summaries and reports on completed field work projects as requested.

Serve as a prescribed fire field crew member on natural resources and range/safety prescribed fires that take place on Fort McCoy. Hold appropriate certifications for prescribed fire.

Operate, transport and conduct routine maintenance on equipment. Conduct supply inventory, take in equipment for routine maintenance and safety inspections and operate equipment for various projects such as invasive plant removal and threatened and endangered species habitat enhancement.
