Description of Work Unit | CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on the Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations. Bellows AFS is located on the eastern coast of O’ahu and is used for military training and recreational opportunities for service personnel and their families. The 422-acre air force station supports beach, dune, and wetland environments that provide essential habitats for important plant and animal species, including Hawaiian hoary bats, Hawaiian monk seals, indigenous Hawaiian waterbirds and sea birds, and a variety of sea turtles. Major focal points of the Bellows AFS natural resources program include restoration projects and management of native and invasive species to promote biodiversity and environmental resilience at the station. Bellows AFS also supports a myriad of valuable cultural resources including an archaeological district listed in the NRHP with artifacts dating to early Hawaiian habitation.
