The Biodiversity and Disturbance Research group at Colorado State University and the Rocky Mountain Research Station is seeking 1 crew leader and 1 exceptional technicians for our summer 2025 field season. This study is focused on non-invasive sampling of birds and mammals (both bats and terrestrial species) using automated recorders during the summer and fall. We aim to increase our understanding of how wildlife communities are impacted by increasingly frequent and severe wildfires in the southern Rocky Mountains. Fieldwork will begin late May/early June, 2025, and continue through August 31, 2025. Flexibility for class schedules will be taken into consideration (if applicable), and there is a potential for additional employment through September depending on funding.
Position Minimum Qualifications
• College coursework in wildlife biology, forestry, or biological science.
• Ability to safely hike and navigate off trail in remote, steep mountainous regions using map, compass, and GPS.
• Ability to work safely in difficult outdoor conditions including during inclement weather.
• Ability to work well with others
• Past experience with data entry and attention to detail.
• Possess valid driver license and have ability to drive long hours on potentially hazardous mountain roads.
• Knowledge of native wildlife species of Colorado and Wyoming forests.
• Excellent communication skills.

Essential Job Duties

Duty/Responsibility
• Monitoring wildlife through trail cameras and automated recording units (ARUs)
• Hiking 5-15 miles per day with a heavy (30-50lb) pack
• Occasional backpacking (1-2 nights) with a heavy pack (50-60lb)
• Extensive driving (up to 400 miles/week) on highways, county roads, and forest service roads
• Camping for up to 4 nights per week, either at a roadside campground or backcountry hike-in campground
• Data entry
• Tagging trail camera photographs by species
