Our Mission in Action

Trees play a vital role in solving some of the most pressing issues facing our communities, our society, and our world today. For 150 years, American Forests (AF) has stood boldly at the forefront of the conservation movement, working collaboratively and innovatively to ensure that all people have access to the benefits of trees. As we look ahead to the next 150, continued collective action will be essential to securing a healthy, climate-resilient future for all. To support this work, we are looking for a Director, Pacific Northwest Urban Forestry to join the Field Delivery team in our Urban Forestry department.

Since 2018, we have been supporting communities by using the power of trees to address environmental injustices faced by the country’s most disadvantaged communities. With this, we created a bold goal of delivering the needed technical expertise, workforce, and funding opportunities, and policy guidance to help U.S. cities commit to and make progress towards "tree equity" across the country.

American Forests’ Urban Forestry team delivers tools, resources, and technical assistance to city and state leaders and coalitions. Our team of regional urban forestry specialists serve as American Forests' front-line staff to both proactively engage new cities and states in committing to tree equity, while also providing exceptional support and services to those already advancing tree equity.

What You’ll Do

The Director, Pacific Northwest Urban Forestry, will lead American Forests' strategy to advance tree equity across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, with a focus on delivering resources, technical assistance, and partnerships to disadvantaged and historically under-resourced communities in cities across the region.

This is a field-facing leadership role. The Director will build and maintain strong working relationships with municipalities and councils, state agencies, local federal partners, and community organizations; connect partners with American Forests' tools and expertise; and deliver hands-on technical assistance to help cities and states prioritize, plant, manage, and protect urban trees where they are needed most. That assistance spans community engagement strategies, local policy and ordinance development, tree planting and maintenance program design, workforce and volunteer engagement, and convening partners at local and regional scales to develop and implement shared urban forestry visions.

Success in this role requires addressing the systemic barriers that constrain urban forestry at every level, from building awareness with mayors and elected officials to shaping planning frameworks and forestry programs, to driving innovation in financing and funding. The right candidate is a recognized leader in the Pacific Northwest urban forestry community, with established relationships across the field, a strong command of policy and planning, and the ability to mobilize diverse stakeholders to build resilient, well-funded, and equitable urban forest systems across the region.

Major Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain city, state, and regional partnerships to advance tree equity across the Pacific Northwest.
  • Support municipalities and partners in adopting American Forests' tools and resources through outreach, learning opportunities, and hands-on technical assistance with priority focus on Washington State Tree Equity Collaborative participants and American Forests’ Catalyst Fund grantees in the region.
  • Identify and pursue public and private funding opportunities to advance regional tree equity strategies.
  • Maintain current awareness of urban forestry issues, cultivate relationships with local, regional, and national leaders, and direct resources strategically within the region.
  • Serve as American Forests' regional expert on urban forestry, tree species, community dynamics, and related topics.
